Where BreadStorm keeps your formulas on a Mac, and how to back them up
If you have years of formulas in BreadStorm for Mac, make a copy now. The newest BreadStorm for Mac version we know of came out in April 2017, and Apple has said that macOS 27 is the final release to support Rosetta, which Macs with Apple silicon use to run apps made for Intel processors.
The BreadStorm folder
~/Library/Application Support/BreadStorm/
The ~ stands for your home folder. A BreadStorm user on The Fresh Loaf forum wrote in January 2021 that this folder holds two files:
BreadStorm3.xmllicense.lplicense, which users describe as the license file that unlocks the app
BreadStorm's own FAQ talks about backing up your "BreadStorm database" but doesn't say which file it is. Copy the whole folder, and you have both.
Open the folder
Use either of these:
- In the Finder, open the Go menu, press and hold the Option key, then choose Library. Open Application Support, then BreadStorm.
- Or, in the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G), type
~/Library/Application Support/BreadStorm/, and press Return.
Back it up
Quit BreadStorm first, so nothing changes while you copy.
- Make a copy. Go up one level to Application Support, then drag the BreadStorm folder to an external drive or another folder. To copy it instead of moving it, hold the Option key while you drag.
- Make a zip file. Control-click the BreadStorm folder and choose Compress. Apple notes that compressing is useful for making backup copies. Keep the zip file somewhere other than your Mac.
- Use BreadStorm's own backup. BreadStorm's FAQ (archived 2019) said an unlocked copy could back up its database from the menu BreadStorm > Save Backup…
- Back up your whole Mac. Time Machine backs up files that weren't part of the macOS installation. Apple recommends backing up to a disk other than your Mac's internal disk.
Moving to a new Mac
Apple's Migration Assistant transfers documents, apps, user accounts, and settings from one Mac to another. One BreadStorm user on The Fresh Loaf reports that after moving all their data to a new laptop, BreadStorm worked without asking for the license again.
Other users report copying the two files above into the same folder on the new Mac. Users also reported in 2021 and 2024 that a BreadStorm Key could no longer unlock the app on a new Mac, because BreadStorm's servers were down. That makes your copy of license.lplicense worth keeping.
Will BreadStorm keep running?
Check what kind of app your copy of BreadStorm is. Select it in the Finder, choose File > Get Info, and look at Kind. "Application (Intel)" means the app is made for Intel processors.
On a Mac with Apple silicon, Intel apps run through Rosetta. Apple says Rosetta is available on macOS 27 or earlier, and that starting with macOS 28 it will be available only for certain older games. Based on Apple's announcement, if your copy is "Application (Intel)," it won't open on an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 28 or later.
Get your formulas out
If BreadStorm still opens and is unlocked, export your formulas as .bun files while you can. BreadStorm's FAQ (archived 2019) said an unlocked copy could export formulas as .bun files. Baker's Hundred opens .bun files in your browser, scales them, and prints production sheets. When you use it, your files stay on your computer.
Baker's Hundred doesn't open BreadStorm3.xml yet. Keep your backup of the whole folder either way.
